Review: Shingmulnara Oxygen Water Tone Up Sun Cushion SPF50+

I had presumed that I wouldn’t get on with Shingmulnara Oxygen Water Tone Up Sun Cushion. It all just seems a bit gimmicky and possibly unhygienic. Yes, it’s convenient to be able to carry your sunscreen about in a sort of all-in-one compact solution, but does it actually work in real life?

I’d probably say that, yes, it does work because it allows for greater flexibility in terms of how and when you can (re)apply sunscreen. Shingmulnara’s Sun Cushion belongs in the touch-up category and I must say it’s handy. You don’t need to remove your makeup and start again, just pat the sunscreen over the top. It provides rather good sun care solutions if you’re out and about in the city.

Shingmulnara describes it as a skin-brightening cushion compact for reapplying SPF without disturbing makeup – and I’d agree with that completely. The peach-toned complexion enhancer is sheer and light to apply. The finish is semi-matte/velvet so it’s great for summer. It’s absolutely brilliant for topping up sun protection “on the go” when you still want to look presentable.

Review Shingmulnara Oxygen Water Tone Up Sun Cushion compact

It’s a game of two halves, this cushion. The peach nude colour means it’s one for people with light skin tones that they are happy to leave virtually bare, but at the same time, it offers something that I haven’t really seen in any other sunscreen. When you pat it over makeup, its brightens foundation that has slightly oxidised on the skin. This isn’t going to suit all — best for skin tones within Korean shades 21–23 range — but it’s definitely something a bit new. At least, I can’t think of any other sunscreen I’ve tried that works quite the same.

I find it useful for quick on-the-go touch-ups; the peach-toned sunscreen fluid and applicator are all neatly housed (with a decent mirror) in a handy compact. The sheer finish means that you don’t get any patchiness or what have you, as the day goes on – and you can top it up layer on layer without it looking claggy. I’d recommend blotting away excess oil before touching up with the sun cushion.

Shingmulnara is a skincare brand exclusive to Olive Young, a beauty store chain based in Korea and the Oxygen Water Tone Up Sun Cushion SPF50+ PA++++ (Peach) is US$21.02 on their English global site. You get 15g of product in the cushion and it comes with a free 15g refill.

This Korean mineral sunscreen cushion also comes in an untinted “white” version, which Korean online reviews say leaves a white cast on the skin.
