Here we are with June’s ‘skincare snapshot’.

Bifesta Foaming Whip Bright Up

SEKKISEI Lotion Excellent

Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster

Junpaku Senka White Beauty Serum: I use this creamy serum as a moisturiser.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Shaka Fluid: I have to be truthful and say that this product managed to slip through the net because it was the only sunscreen I had on the table. I included it without giving a second thought and I didn’t want to retake the picture. There are definitely far more pleasant sunscreens on the market, but for in the UK or Europe, Shaka Fluid isn’t the worst option.

MUJI Mild Gel Cleansing

Bifesta Foaming Whip Bright Up

SEKKISEI Lotion Excellent

Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster (on nights I’m not using Azclear & Retin-A)

Azclear Action 20% Azelaic Acid Medicated Lotion (every other night): The tube slipped behind a bottle in the picture, but you can find it if you look hard enough.

Retin-A 0.025% Gel (every other night after Azclear): I apply this after the Azclear since it pills if I do the reverse.

SANA Namerakahonpo Emulsion NA

Yes, I figured I’d layer them to save myself the hassle of using them separately. Also, according to a study done 2 decades ago, “Tretinoin augmented the depigmenting effect of azelaic acid as shown by a faster response and a more pronounced improvement with the combination treatment during the first 3 months, and by a higher rate of excellent results at the end of therapy.”

Octinoxate in almost all Japanese sunscreen; however, I’ve read that ingredient is a common irritant. I know that alcohol and parabens have a place in skincare formulations, so I was wondering if you also believe that octinoxate is used purposefully in a non-irritable manner in Japanese sunscreen formulations?

All ingredients can be an irritant. It’s unlikely that many people are actually sensitive or allergic to it. Not impossible, of course, but statistically highly unlikely. I dare say that a lot of people who say they avoid octinoxate because their skin is sensitive to it are actually already using a non-sunscreen product that contains it. A lot of Western makeup contain it, including ones that don’t have SPF stated. In Japan, encapsulation technologies are popularly used to minimise UV filters contact with skin.
