I purchased this sunscreen in Singapore under the name ‘Sunplay Skin Aqua UV Watery Gel’. Same packaging, same bottle design, same SPF and PA rating, but with different ingredients. Upon further inspection, I found out that the export version sold in other Asian countries is actually superior: it so turns out that the version I bought contains 6 UV filters versus the 4 found in the domestic Japanese version. The 2 extra filters are Ensulizone, and, believe it or not, Tinosorb M. Not only does the export version have both Uvinuls, it also has both Tinosorbs. I have to admit… Read more »
It’s a completely different sunscreen from this. It isn’t the “export version” and it isn’t made in Japan.
Most, if not all, Rohto products sold in Asia outside of Japan are developed and made by subsidiary companies in China, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc. They have similar (but not identical) packagings, names, and concepts because they’re licensed by Rohto — they’re not developed or made by Rohto (unlike products in Japan).
Do you know if this has been discontinued? Sold out at YesStyle and Rakuten and the Amazon price went from $11 from when I bought it a while back to $17+. Thank you
It’s still very much in production and readily available in Japan.
Thank you, that’s good to know. I love this one, since it has no esters (unlike other light ones like Biore Essence) and is absolutely unique in that as far as I know. Very acne friendly
A few weeks ago this sunscreen was classified as “sebum resistant” instead of “water resistant”, was that just a mistake or referring to an older version? Is it really water resistant?
The old (original) packaging had no mention of it being water or sweat-resistant anywhere. The new 2017 packaging, however, does — at the front where “NEW” used to be. That being said, ingredients (on the website and printed on the bottle itself) are still completely identical. I simply updated the listing to go with the most current info.
This is sunscreen formulated for everyday wear only, so personally I feel it makes no difference either way.
Are these chemical sunscreens all photo-stable? Also how does this compare to the Nivea Sun Protect Gel, is it somewhat moisturizing by itself?
Yes, it’s photostable. It’s somewhat moisturising, but it also depends on your skin type. If you’ve dry skin, it might not make a noticeable difference.
Hi,
I was wondering if you know if the Skin Aqua UV Watery Gel (Link: http://www.guardian.com.sg/sunplay-skin-aqua-uv-watery-gel-spf50-pa-80g/p/130010) found in my local drugstore is a variation of this particular product?
Thanks!
Your link doesn’t work. Rohto products that are marketed for outside of Japan have different ingredients/formulas than Japan’s and they’re not Japan-made (despite the Japanese printed).
If the Japanese version is what you want, both the packaging and product name need to be exactly the same as what shown in my site.
Hi there!
Love your blog =) Do you know if your linked seller Energyplus ships via SAL? I couldn’t tell from their Store Info page and did not want to submit an order without knowing first. Thanks!
According to their shop information link, they do and they also accept Paypal.
There is 2 types of SAL shipping though, “Small Package” and “International Parcel”, make sure to request SAL Small Package if your order is going to weigh less than 2 kg. There is a significant price difference (it’s 4x cheaper)!
Thanks so much for the info! Have a great day!
It’s definitely worth a try, especially if your skin is fine without a separate moisturiser. The Moisture Milk isn’t ideal for oily skin and it isn’t mattifying, so there’s a chance that your skin will just look oily.
Is this ok to use on summer?
Depends on your activity level. This is formulated to protect your skin from everyday incidental sun exposure only.
Ty for replying, can you suggest a good sunscreen for when i have to stay out few hours on summer? I’m still a newbie with this suncreen thing, i just discovered your page , really helpful!
Hi, Ratzilla! Is this sunscreen waterproof? Also, how does this compare to the Nivea Sun Protect Water Gel SPF50 PA++++?
Info is in the post already — but no, it isn’t.
On my package, instead of “New” it says 汗・水・に強い, doesn’t that mean it’s water and sweat resistant?
That is what that means, but the version shown above mentions nothing of it on the packaging. In fact, the back specifically instructs to reapply immediately if skin is sweating or gets wet.
Could a different version be released already? I can’t read Japanese, so I don’t know what it says on the back, but the front says 汗・水・に強い.
Hi Mona, where did you purchase yours from?
So sad, I cannot seem to find this version on Amazon–the link takes me to last year’s formula, I think. I will have to give Rakuten a try!
I think it’s currently sold out on Amazon as it was still available couple days ago.
Hello Ratzilla,
Once again, you wrote a great review on your favourite sunscreens, very informative as usual. Do you think it would be safe to wear this sunscreen and walk on the street for 10 mm from my house to the supermarket or should I only use it indoors? Thanks in advance for your answer.
Oh yes, unless you live somewhere hot as I’d imagine this would probably melt right off minutes after you step outside!
