32 Comments on Japanese Sunscreen Comparison Chart

  1. Are there any Essence, Milk or Gel type of Japanese sunscreen that has a sheer beige tint kind of like the BB/CC creams? The BB/CC creams are too thick and I like the liquidy formulas. I also like to apply my sunscreen in sheer layers to get the full 1/4tsp. I can’t filter this in the search engine.

  2. Does blotting make sunscreen less effective? My current sunscreen is quite oily on my skin but I’m wary of blotting because I don’t want to compromise my sun protection

    • Sunscreen needs to stay put on your skin in order to be effective — if it’s slidding around on your face (because the formula and/or your skin is oily), it’s not going to be protective. Blotting will also remove some of the sunscreen. It’s best to try a different sunscreen — one that is compatible with your skin type and needs.

  3. Was wondering what exactly is meant by ‘oil resistant’? Does it mean that if you have oily skin, you need to use an oil resistant sunscreen, in order for it to be effective?

    • Sebum will break down sunscreen — and very quickly too if your skin is quite oily. It’s more practical to use a sunscreen that is both mattifying AND sebum-resistant.

  4. Thank you so much for this very helpful chart. One question, though — are there any recommended Japanese chemical sunscreens that you know of that don’t contain octinoxate? It irritates my skin, but physical sunscreens are often too heavy for my combination skin. Thanks!

  5. I would like to see on the chart how much UVA ,UVB, and infrared light protection. By the way, do any of these sunscreens protect against infrared light? I read that infrared light is more damaging than UV light! I happen to see an ingredient that protects against ir rays called physavie.

    • That info is there already — they’re all rated SPF50+ (UVB) PA++++ (UVA). None of them claims anything about IR rays.

  6. Hello … my skin is oily … I could not find a protector that does not shine on my skin … I also do treatment for blemishes … I would like to thank you!

  7. i thought the allie extra uv gel doesn’t have oil control… or is this a different version of the one covered in your review?

    • While it’s sebum-resistant (so it won’t immediately dissolve/melt off if it comes in contact with your skin’s natural oil), it offers no oil-control — it doesn’t help keep the skin matte and its finish isn’t matte.

  8. As I’ve also commented to @disqus_QOcn9IWrA2:disqus below, Sweat/water-resistant doesn’t automatically mean that the product is formulated for the outdoors/sports. You can be indoors with air conditioning technically on and still sweat buckets during hot, humid summer months in Japan due to massive energy conservation efforts.

Keep in mind that sunscreens intended for babies and kids (e.g. the Mommy and Biore sunscreens you mentioned) are really meant for kid’s activities, i.e. a short trip to the playground, park, etc. They’re not supposed to be that tenacious as the parent/guardian need to be able to easily wash if off later. If you’re an adult using a babies/kids sunscreen on yourself, expectation needs to be tapered.

  9. What make a sunscreen not ideal for everyday use? I was hoping to use the Anessa perfect UV Aqua Booster as I work outside everyday and sweat buckets. I need something MUSTS: Sweat, waterproof, outdoor use; preferable: matte, non-greasy (dirt sticks to anything that dries tacky or greasy/oily) minimal white cast. Is this too tall an order?

  10. Hmm looks like Biore UV Perfect milk is perfect for me. My skin is sensitive, oiily and I also sweat buckets!

  11. Is Dr. Ci:Labo UV White & Moisture Milk SPF50+ PA++++ (2016 version) suitable for everyday and outdoor use?

  12. This is great! Thank you so much. I’ve tried out quite a few of these, but it gets so hard to remember which is for outdoor use and which is for everyday use.

  13. why is the Skin Aqua Moisture Milk good for outdoors but not the Skin Aqua Moisture Gel, too?

    • That is what the manufacturer claims.

Sweat/water-resistant doesn’t mean that the product is formulated for the outdoors/sports — lot of makeup are as well. Due to massive energy conservation efforts during hot, humid summer months in Japan, you can be indoors with air conditioning technically on and still sweat buckets.
