DETAILS

Kao’s Biore UV Aqua Rich is a Japanese drugstore sunscreen line for daily use that features protection-enriched Water Capsule that enables the sunscreen to turn into water when applied on skin. It contains a blend of hyaluronic acid and “Mix Citrus Essence” to help skin retain its moisture and softness.

Biore UV AQUA Rich Watery Essence is a Japanese sunscreen that applies like water.

The daily use sunscreen has the same fresh, water-light texture and smooth, invisible finish as its previous formula, but it is reformulated to feature PA++++ UVA protection to better protect the skin against pre-mature skin-ageing.

It leaves the skin feeling comfortable without a sticky or tight sensation.

  • Not resistant to water, sweat, or sebum.
  • Can be used as a makeup base.
  • Removable with a face wash.

33 Comments on Biore UV AQUA Rich Watery Essence SPF50+ PA++++ [DISCONTINUED]

  1. My sincere apolgies if this question has already been answered, but could you tell me if this is photostable? I’ve recently started to use aha and bha and absolutely cannot find a sunscreen that isn’t greasy and stick so I’m very keen to try this!

  2. Firstly, I have been a long-time reader and enjoy your site. Keep it up! I, too, enjoy using Biore UV Aqua Rich, when it is cloudy or just hanging around the house. For normal skin, what sunscreen do you love for sunny outdoors where one would sweat?

    • I have normal skin as well, and my go-to sunscreens for hot sunny days outdoor last year were the Biore milks (prep skin with something more moisturising underneath), Menturm Sun Bears Strong Cool/ Super Plus (on the décolleté area and limbs), Allie Mineral Moist Neo, and Sekkisei Sun Protect Essence Milk.

  3. It is marketed just for face in our country. Can I use this for my body as well? Do you have other recommendations for “everyday use” for my body? Thank you

  4. Hello Ratzilla 🙂

I think this sunscreen looks great, but I’d like to know a bit more about the alcohol concentration. It’s obviously the 3rd ingredient on the list, but I guess that doesn’t really state the concentration precisely – e.g. it could be 5 % or 30 % … Ratzilla, would it be possible for you to ask Bioré about the concentration (e.g. via costumer service)? I would do so myself, but unfortunately I don’t speak Japanese at all. :/
I can imagine you have a lot to do, but that would be so nice of you. Thank you so much! :)))

  5. The link seems to be sold out. Do you know where else this is available? I’m in Japan at the moment and all the drug stores only sell the 2014 version. 🙁

  6. Hi Ratzilla, I recently came across this sunscreen and I really really love it. I bought another 3 from ebay. I know that this one is not water resistant, does it mean I have to reapply them more often during summer days when I sweat a lot? Can I still use this when I go to the beach and swim a bit? Or would you recommend biore uv perfect milk for swimming?

    Thanks,
    Jenny

    • This is a sunscreen formulated for normal, everyday wear — errand runs, work/school days, etc. where you get minimal sun exposure. It shouldn’t be relied upon if you’re spending time in the sun. It will not offer your skin adaquate protection even if you reapply often.

Regardless of the amount of sun exposure, I wouldn’t recommend using this sunscreen if you’re going to be sweating or getting wet, or your skin is oily as it’ll come right off.

      • Oh, nice. Thanks! 🙂
Is that this brand specifically or generally most japanese chemical sunscreens? Is it different for the “milk” physical ones?

          • Is it 3 years from opening, or 3 years from the manufacture date? (in which case, how do you tell the manufacture date?)

            • 3 years from from manufactured date for unopened, 6 months to a year (depends on the product) after openning, whichever comes first.

Most products get repackaged and/or reformulated on a near annual basis so there’s no need for dates.

            • Ahw, ok.. How do you tell which products are 6months and which are 1 year then?

            • You don’t, but if you need to know that in order to find out whether a product is still usable, then it’s probably best to just toss it. If you’re buying the current version from Japan, it’s a non-issue.

  7. Hi. I have an oily, acne prone but also very sensitive and dry skin. What SS resists to sebum and is good for everyday use?? Thank you!

  8. Can you do a review on this one comparing it to the 2014? Btw was there a difference in packaging for the 2011 and 2014 formulations?

  9. Hello,

Would you recommend this sunscreen for those with oily skin since it is not resistant to sebum?

    • Depends on your expection. If you’ve oily skin and you’re wearing a sunscreen that isn’t sebum-resistant, you shouldn’t expect it to stay put or keep your skin matte. Like someone with dry skin wearing a sunscreen formulated to keep oily skin matte… it may very well work, but it’s not the sunscreen’s fault if it ends up too drying.

  10. Hi, First of all, I just wanted to say thank you for this website. As a skincare fanatic, it’s an absolutely phenomenal resource. Quick question: I recently purchased a large amount of sunscreens based on your reading your site ( the Biore UV aqua rich watery essence 2014 version, the nivea sun protect plus uv cream and waterproof version, kanebo allie uv powder, etc). I really went on a tear. I used the seller (ELShop) link at the bottom of the respective posts to order, but there was a problem when I got my paypal statement. The payment was not made to EL shop but instead was listed as being paid to “Zhushihuish” which is a Chinese sounding name. Being concerned about potentially counterfeit products, I contacted the seller. The return e-mail was in broken English with some explanation about paypal being responsible for the name choice. I also asked about the physical address of the shop, and was given a random answer about the store being far from Tokyo, in Iwate prefecture. Also, that the store does not usually have any winter inventory if I wanted to visit in person, etc. Needless to say, I am wary of using the product/questioning it’s authenticity. Could you please provide some insight, particularly about the claim of having no winter inventory? How can a genuine store have no inventory for the winter? Thanks in advance and forgive the length of the post. Keep up the awesome work!!!!

    • As I don’t know what the emails exactly said, I cannot comment. It’s best to use very, very simple English in your communication with Rakuten stores, otherwise, it’s going to get lost in translation. Most understand minimal English. Store address, phone number, and other info of each Rakuten store are always in Shop Information (Japanese only).

As for payment statement names, I personally don’t like to assume. In my experience from countless personal online shopping transactions, the name of small online stores and the name of the appears on my payment statements are rarely the same.

      • Thanks for providing much needed answers to my inquiry, and in such a timely fashion too! You were absolutely right about the store name situation. I just placed another Rakuten order a little while ago, and paypal’s confirmation e-mail was for the same name they billed to before for a completely different store. As a diehard Japanese sunscreen fanatic, I am in absolute heaven on this site. All of my greasy Anthelios from overseas is promptly going in the trash, now that I can order with confidence here in the states. You rock Ratzilla!!!!

  11. Hi 🙂 just wondering if this is suitable for combination skin used in the summer? would the gel one be more fit?

    Cheers.xx

    • Yes, but do keep in mind that it’s not resistant to anything — so, not suitable if you going to get sweaty or greasy. Same with the gel.
