Review: Kiku-Masamune Sake Brewing Skin Care Essence

I‘ve really tried with this serum, but this review is something of a mixed bag. I’ve read so many glowing reviews (in Japanese) of Kiku-Masamune Sake Brewing Skin Care Essence online and so, I was expecting it to be love at first use. But it wasn’t. I was so completely underwhelmed by this.

Let’s talk about its formula first: in theory, it’s an excellent lightweight serum full of powerhouse ingredients (like sake, amino acids, ceramides, vitamin C, arbutin just to name a few!) that hydrate, soothe, smooth, and brighten skin. Alcohol-free and silicone-free so perfect for all skin types and a terrific “all-rounder”.

But this isn’t what happened on my skin at all. I’ve tried the Sake Brewing Skin Care Essence on and off for a good few months — from cold winter to balmy spring to stifling summer — and I’ve come to a simple conclusion: it makes barely any visible difference. The serum has the fresh feeling, and the hydrating and softening effects of a run-of-the-mill watery lotion, aka hydrating toner. For people with oily or combination skin, people who maybe worry about products sitting heavy, this is not necessarily a bad thing. I do like the fast-absorbing feel, but at the same time, it doesn’t have quite the “oomph” that I want from a moisturising serum. And that, disappointingly, just about sums up the results. It’s made no headway in soothing and smoothing dry, flaky patches. I could see no difference in the skin’s overall brightness.

Imagine this. Your favourite sports team that’s super-rich, very popular, and makes all the key signings that matter, but it’s underperforming. They should be succeeding, they should be performing better, but somehow they fall short in all the matches that matter. Kiku-Masamune’s Sake Brewing Skin Care Essence has everything going for it — great ingredients, lovely formula, decent packaging, and fantastic value for money — but somehow it falls short where it counts.

If you want to try it for yourself, you can find it at Amazon Japan HERE — it’s ¥1,750 (international shipping via AmazonGlobal).
