Top 6 Japanese Sunscreens for Spring & Summer 2013

It is early summer, and that means one thing: sunscreen releases are done for the year in Japan.

It seems a bit silly to go on about sunscreens for spring when full-blown summer is just around the corner, although weather is still fairly mild in some places. I intended to do a ‘top 5’ specifically on PA++++ sunscreens but there are only a handful of them — and many aren’t something I would want to use regularly, if truth be known.

My picks this year are a mix of both, and sunscreens from last year’s releases are included as well. I was going to my do my top picks in June, but I have rushed this post after reading a few emails from readers requesting to have this out a.s.a.p. as they’re about to go away on holiday.

Some of the sunscreens mentioned will be featured in their own separate reviews, so be sure to check back if you want to know more. Also, please kind in mind that I personally dislike matte finish (for sunscreens and makeup) — skin without a bit of natural glow looks so lifeless.

So in no particular order:

1. ALLIE Extra UV Gel (Mineral Moist) N SPF50+/PA++++
It offers waterproof high UV protection that feels moisturising and lightweight enough for daily use.

2. MEN’S Biore Facial Lotion (UV Milky Type) SPF30/PA+++
The daily use milky gel applies like water and disappears into the skin without  a trace. It comes a in 180ml bottle and it has light citrus scent (similar Biore UV Aqua Rich). Only for men? I say not!

3. ETVOS Mineral UV Powder SPF50/PA+++ (Limited Edition)
This all-natural, nanoparticle-free loose powder gives skin UV protection and sheer coverage — and it comes with 30-day money back guarantee.

4. NIVEA Sun Protect Water Gel SPF50/PA+++
It’s always good to have options, and this is another excellent daily use sunscreen gel that disappears into the skin.

5. Parasola Essence In UV Cut Spray EX SPF50+/PA++++
The handy floral-scented aerosol mist is water, sweat and sebum-resistant, and can be used directly on the face, body, and hair anytime during the day.

6. ALLIE Extra UV Protector (Perfect Alpha) S SPF50+/PA++++
I’ve always been a fan of Allie sunscreens, and this upgraded version is a well-rounded choice for the outdoors.

Fasio BB Cream SPF50+/PA++++

Fasio BB Cream
It has just been released in Japan but I’ve been trying the press sample since I’ve received it. This long-wearing BB cream rivals many sebum-resistant sunscreens! It can be layered without cakiness, and it gives skin a very smooth, natural finish.

I am basically an Indian. I have shifted to Kyoto a month back and badly struggling with sun screen to be used here.. I tried Nivea SPF 30+ but its not working for me.. I have already tanned my skin a lot and really scared about my complexion.. My present requirements are to avoid further tanning and reduce tanning .. I don’t want to try something which will leave a whitening cast (as it will look bad on my tanned skin).. due to language problem I am not able to communicate with the beauticians.. Can you please suggest me some… Read more »

Thank you so much for this post! And I’m sorry if you’ve answered this question before but what is your skin type? I’ve got combination-dry skin and I don’t want my face to dry out because of a my sun cream. Thank you!

Hi, your blog is awesome! Thanks 🙂 I’ve recently relocated to Japan and bought my first ever japanese sunscreen (other brands never worked for my skin when I tried unsuccessfully to use sunscreen earlier) – Biore Aqua rich (blue tube) SPF 50, and it has worked like magic. I do have hypersensitive skin that burns in the sun very easily, so thank you for the review of this particular sunscreen. I also have the shiseido aqua label blue series (lotion and emulsion, both the ‘R’ type). My question – in what order should I apply these 3 products? Sunscreen first… Read more »

Thanks for the list – consider you an invaluable resource. I have perused (and tried many on) your other list of all physical sunscreens but cannot find one that fits these criteria:

– Alcohol free
– Physical sunscreen only (no chemical sunscreens)
– Sweat resistant
– Can be a makeup base (preferred but not necessary as long as can use under makeup)
– For very dry skin

I am Asian with light skin so slight white cast is acceptable. Live in HK so have access to many of your listed sunscreens. Many thanks!

Thanks very much. Will try the Sunkiller Mild Milk as it is easily found in HK. Much appreciated!

Thank you so much for this list! I bought Biore Aqua Rich after reading your post a while ago, and I LOVE IT. Will try a few new ones this summer though.

I’ve read a few posts here and there stating that chemical sunscreens only protects until the sunlight damages the sunscreen particles so they can no longer block or absorb the rays. Have you heard of this before?

Thank you so much for this list. I’ve been introduced to ALLIE sunscreens through your reviews, and am currently adoring the ALLIE Extra UV Protector (the newly formulated PA++++).

I’m interested in purchasing ALLIE Extra UV Gel (Mineral Moist). May I ask if it’s more whitening than the UV Protector?

The UV Protector leaves a thin white cast on my face (since I have slightly tanned skin, and tend to slather on my sunscreen), and I’m just wondering if the UV Gel will be more whitening than the UV Protector if I use the same amount of both.

Thank you!

Thanks for answering!

May I also ask another question: I’m thinking of getting either the Fasio BB Cream or the Anessa BB Cream. Can I ask how the Light shades for these 2 compare? Is one of them darker?

I’m afraid I might be too dark for 01 but too light for 02 for Anessa, and I’m not sure about Fasio.

How about Fasio’s other PA++++ sunscreen, call ” FASIO Clear Block UV Sunscreen Gel SPF50+ PA++++”? How does that compares to the BB Cream? And does Japanese “gel” sunscreen balls up because gels with a high silicone content does that for me. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply. I’ll for sure steer clear of this one.

I tried that one and I absolutely hated it. It has a strong alcohol scent, burns my eyes and leaves a thick, greasy film on my skin

Which shade of the Fasio BB cream do you use? Have you tested shade no. 1? 🙂
