Yes, it’s that time of the year again. I have finally got around to trying out all the newly launched sunscreens that have landed on my desk.
Japanese cosmetics companies have really stepped up their game this year on SPF50+ PA++++ sunscreens — many are lightweight and just a joy to use. I chose only budget buys this year as excellent sunscreens should be affordable for everyone (nothing here costs more than 1,200 JPY).
Keep in mind that I have light, normal-combination (resilient) skin, here’s a run-down of my top five newly launched SPF50+ PA++++ sunscreens of 2014. If you missed last year’s top picks, you can check it out here.
1) Biore UV Bright Face Milk SPF50+ PA++++
One of my most-used sunscreens so far, and it works beautifully as a matte primer. I use a good moisturiser underneath, and add some dewy glow on top.
2) MENTURM Sun Bears Strong Cool Plus
It dries quickly to a smooth, matte finish and gives the neck/décolleté area a cool-refreshing sensation. At less than $4, it’s super-affordable and small enough to keep in your pocket or handbag.
3) ParaDo Buzz Guard UV
I’m not an outdoorsy person (camping is my idea of hell), but mosquitoes are relentless even in city parks. This (DEET-free) insect-repelling sunscreen gel is a must-have during mosquito season — it offers waterproof protection, feels refreshing, and keeps pesky flying insects away.
4) NIVEA Sun Protect Plus Skin UV Cream
A very nice, daily use sunscreen cream that melts into the skin for those that need more moisture than typical daily use gel and essence formulas.
5) PRIVACY UV Face Powder 50
This translucent powder sunscreen disappears upon application but leave a matte, silky-smooth finish, just like a good loose setting powder.
