Best Pick: MUJI Light Toning Water High Moisture

Best Pick MUJI Light Toning Water High Moisture

For those not hiding underneath the biggest rock for the past 2 decades, MUJI will need no introduction — it been producing some of the best ultra-affordable, plain basics since 1980 and has a huge following worldwide. In Japan, MUJI is mainly popular for its “high quality, low price” appeal than its normcore aesthetics, which is why I find its international stores’ mark-up to be shocking.

The sturdy bottle has volume measurement markings (in millimetres) at the side.

The Light Toning Water High Moisture has a cult-like status in Japan and it’s one of my favourite things from them. It is unabashedly dull and basic — that’s MUJI for you — but I do enjoy it when a product does exactly what it says on the tin. It gives dry, sensitive skin — you’ve guessed it — a high moisture boost that feels light as water. In fact, you’d be forgiven at first for thinking that this was plain water in a bottle. Skin feels softer and replenished without any telltale signs of product.

If you prefer your hydrating watery lotion/toner to make your skin superbly juicy and plump, this is not for you. This formula is instantly absorbed and leaves no trace. Skin feels fresh and comfortable with just the right amount of hydration. Stick a spray nozzle in there — MUJI has one that fits all its bottles for about ¥150 — and you got yourself a nice hydrating mist.

Ingredients: Water,, dipropylene glycol,, glycerin,, PEG-43,, diglycerin,, glyceryl trehalose,, hydrogenated starch hydrolysate,, sodium hyaluronate,, allantoin,, citrus grandis (grapefruit) seed extract,, ratzillacosme.com do.not.copy,, polyquaternium-51,, portulaca oleracea extract,, butylene glycol,, phenoxyethanol,, sodium PCA,, sodium citrate,, citric acid.

The (mildly acidic) formula is quite straightforward as expected, but it’s beautifully put together and has ingredients proven to help hydrate and soothe the skin. It’s also free of alcohol, oils, fragrance, silicones, and parabens, so suitable for skin on its more sensitive days.

In Japan, MUJI’s Light Toning Water High Moisture is just ‎¥666 for 200ml or ¥1,200 for 400ml. Price in their international stores vary, but it’s generally double Japanese retail price. It doesn’t seem to be stocked on its North American or European online stores, which is such a shame! Those who don’t live near a MUJI store can still find it on Amazon.com and eBay for US$14.47+.
