Japan’s largest beauty cosmetics review website, @cosme, has announced the winners of the much-anticipated @cosme The Best Cosmetics Awards 2021 (source) on December 9, 2021.
The winners are determined based only on the average number of reviews and points left by @cosme users over a one-year period from November 1st, 2020 to October 31st, 2021.
The website has a very powerful position in the market so beauty brands place great importance on the results. These awards are determined mathematically based on data collected but contrary to popular belief, they aren’t completely unbiased.
Major brands give @cosme hundreds (sometimes thousands) of free products each month to give away to users in exchange for written reviews on the website. Products that garnered the most user reviews and received the highest overall ratings will win. Take one first-place winner with over 5,500 verified user reviews, for example, a little digging and quick calculation revealed that only 27% purchased the product.
Nevertheless, they’re still widely considered to be one of the most reliable representations of consumer trends in Japan due to their unmatched ability to influence women’s decisions to purchase specific products.
