Worst Pick: RMK Makeup Base

RMK Makeup Base is one of the most popular makeup bases in Japan and Hong Kong among professional makeup artists, models, and everyday women. Almost everyone have it in their kit or makeup bag.

I have revisited RMK Makeup Base countless times hoping that I’ll finally get why it gets so much raves. Unfortunately, this is yet another popular product that I don’t share the love. The problem with it was that it did the opposite of what I wanted and expected from a makeup base.

First, it made my non-oily skin oilier. The makeup base is supposed to give a naturally bright/dewy finish to the skin…. and it did for a short while. Then it quickly made me look rather oily. This brings me to the 2nd problem; my makeup lasted longer without the makeup base on. Those 2 issues alone would be a deal breaker but to make things worse, it seemed to seep into my pores as the day went on, making my regular sized pores look rather enlarged. It was supposed to cover pores and make them “disappear” not the other way around!

RMK Makeup Base was not all bad since it moisturized my skin nicely and it made my skin felt very smooth. My makeup did look more beautiful for about an hour, and then things start to go south rather quickly. I have tried it in hot humid summer weather and dry freezing winter weather… same deal.

For 3,675 Yen a bottle and all the raves associated with it, I expected a lot more.
