Worst Pick: Garnier Skin Renew Dark Spot Treatment Mask

Garnier Skin Renew Dark Spot Treatment Mask review

Dear Garnier, your new Skin Renew Dark Spot Treatment Mask out in Canada (and US) is absolutely terrible! This is the first mass-market sheet mask in North America and it now can be readily found in any major drugstore. Unfortunately, whoever designed and marketed this is an absolute moron!

The blurb, or “sales-speak”: apparently sheet masks — or as Garnier calls them, “tissue masks” — are the latest skincare innovation from Asia. Each sheet contains ½ a bottle of hydrating vitamin C serum, leaving skin intensely hydrated for 24 hours and brightened for smoother-looking, radiant skin. It has a breakthrough stretch-to-fit technology that acts as a second skin, giving better adherence to the natural contour of the face. Gentle yet effective treatment against the look of dark spots. It’s “a true skincare innovation”.

Really? Surely they — the research and marketing department — know that these sheet masks have been mainstream for more than a decade in Asia? There are innovative sheet masks around, but this is not of them. The “breakthrough stretch-to-fit technology” in reality, is a thin, flimsy cotton sheet with cut-outs and slits. Nothing mind-blowing, but it does fit the face well. I find the sheet is slightly smaller, which could be a good or bad thing, depending on the size of your face.

They emphasise (in bold and capital letters) that HALF a bottle of serum (15ml) in each mask. That’s it? (Meanwhile, cosmetics companies in Asia are rightfully boasting each sheet contains a WHOLE bottle of serum!) That’s the least amount of serum I’ve ever seen in an individually wrapped sheet mask! As expected, it noticeably starts to dry on the skin (a big no-no when using sheet masks), close to the 10-minute mark. The average mass-market sheet mask contains 25ml per sheet! (Its press blurb and website say 15ml, whereas the packaging says 19 ml. From the look of the sheet, I’m guessing it’s the former!)

Considering this features vitamin C (ascorbyl glucoside) as the key ingredient, shouldn’t it be near the top of the list as opposed to halfway down near the bottom? Preservatives, thickeners, castor oil, and lemon peel extract all precede it. No wonder the mask only claims to minimise THE LOOK of dark spots. It couldn’t possibly actually fade anything with so little Vitamin C!

All that aside, it slightly irritated my non-sensitive skin and it didn’t seem to absorb well —  it sat on top like a sticky film! It barely hydrated my skin.

How can Garnier justify charging $15.95 plus tax for a box of 6 such badly designed, poorly formulated sheet masks (that are made in China)? If you live in a large city with a sizable Asian population, amazing Asian sheet masks (including ones mentioned here on RatzillaCosme) are readily available in Asian grocery stores for near equal or, more often, a lot lower price. Countless e-tailers also carry a myriad of sheet masks from all over Asia for cheap.

Garnier is clearly trying to reproduce what has been mainstream in Asia-Pacific for years, but this is a terrible take! There is nothing “intensive” about it aside from its fragrance — very heavy and overwhelming. (I do have a rather sensitive nose.) I’m not sure what’s worst to me: its scent, formula, or marketing?

I don’t recommend using this, but if you really want to try it for yourself, it’s US$6.50+ HERE from Amazon.com.
