Cortas Rose Water

Everyone seems to have rose mists and spritzes these days — especially high-priced natural skin care brands, but many seem to be nothing more than highly fragranced water ladened with essential oils and preservatives.

None of us actually need mists in our skin care routines but I love the fresh and cool feeling of them. The Cortas Rose Water is food-grade rosewater (which is higher than cosmetics grade) from Lebanon, and it can be found in local Middle Eastern grocery stores for less than CDN$2 for a 300ml bottle. It smells exactly like fresh rose petals, mild and sweet — unlike the cloying and chemical rose scents that many rose-themed beauty products seem to have.

I mix Cortas Rose Water with Thayers Original Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera (with alcohol) in a spray bottle — I do 60/40 — and it does an excellent job at refreshing, balancing, and hydrating skin on hot, muggy days. I sometimes add niacinamide powder (which is completely stable and soluble in water) for added benefits — I buy niacinamide capsules (empty the content into the liquid) — and, it is great at soothing and calming skin. On occasion, I saturate a cotton wool pad and use it in lieu of step 2 in double cleansing (more on double cleansing here), and it leaves the skin feeling clean and toned, but never overly tight or dried out.

I test a lot of mass-market facial mists and I would say the majority of them don’t do enough to worth their high retail price. I much prefer my own homemade version, which costs a small fraction of the price and has much better results.

You can find Cortas Rose Water (expiry date is printed) at specialty and Middle Eastern grocery stores. Thayers Original Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera and niacinamide capsules are available at your local supplement and health food stores.
