Review: Vichy Bi-White Med Deep Corrective Whitening Essence

Back in January 2012, Vichy challenged me to test out their whitening (brightening) serum and give it an honest review, and I agreed. I made a post about it and promised to report back in about a month time with my findings. If you haven’t seen the original post, you can do so here: Vichy Bi-White Med/ProEVEN Challenge. I highly suggest reading that first as the post is an introduction to this review.

The Bi-White Med Deep Corrective Whitening Essence and ProEVEN Daily Dark Spot Corrector are supposed to be identical, just marketed for different regions. There are actually minor differences but the overall results should be the same.

The Bi-White Med has a 2-part screw cap with a white metal covering that you have to manually pierce before using. Pretty standard, right? Now the ProEVEN packaging really irks me. It has no metal covering that I can see. The product came leaking out through the narrow spout as soon as I twist open the screw cap — in fact, it leaks non-stop every time the cap is removed. If I were a paying customer, I would have taken it back to the store and ask for a refund.

I personally tested the Bi-White Med and quite honestly, I’m on the fence about it. Like the ProEVEN, It’s supposed to be used on its own  in lieu of a serum and moisturizer for optimal results. I find that it’s not moisturising enough to use on its own but it’s still too emollient to layer a moisturizer over. Perhaps its texture would fare better for my skin in warmer weather. I generally don’t mind fragrances in skincare as long as it’s pleasant. ‘Pleasant’ of course is entirely subjective — and unfortunately, I find this particular scent overpowering and barely tolerable as I really dislike sweet, fruity scent. The scent reminds me of a slightly toned down version of Garnier’s signature scent.

My mum, on the other hand, thinks the texture is lovely as it is richer than most serums — giving her a welcome boost of moisture in the winter under her current moisturizer. According to her its fragrance smells ‘too strong and cheap’ — she prefers fragrance-free.

Results: I only use it once a day and I most definitely notice a difference in overall complexion. It looks brighter, fresher, and just more evenly toned. The whole reason why I have enlisted my mum for the testing is because she has hyperpigmentation and I don’t — and I am happy to report that she is starting to notice her brown spots fading after applying it twice a day for over a month.

What’s my verdict? Definitely do try a tester before purchasing. I feel the ProEVEN packaging is very poorly designed. For US$43.50 a tube, I expect it to be visibly sealed and not leak non-stop! Faulty packaging or simply bad luck, first impression matters — and ProEVEN and I got off to a very bad start. That aside, the scent and texture alone are enough reasons for me to personally give both a pass — I’ve given my mum the rest of my tube. My mum says she might purchase if it is on sale as it seems to be quite effective for her brown spots but she’s definitely open to trying other brands (as she has never used a “whitening” serum before).

Vichy’s Bi-White Med is Asia-exclusive (not available in Japan) and ProEVEN is available in drugstores across USA and Canada.
