Best Pick NIVEA Sun Protect Water Gel SPF33

Please let me introduce you to one of the most user-friendly sunscreens (yes I’m reviewing one when it’s still the middle of winter) for daily use.  You get a whopping 140g (huge for Japanese standard) in a pump-action bottle! Because it’s so quick and easy to use (no lid to take off, cap to twist, bottle to shake, nor tube to squeeze) it sees a lot of action, especially during winter where I get minimal UV exposure. (UV radiation can be intense if there is snow on the ground — but it rarely snows here.)

It’s easy to dispense the right amount of product (I use one full pump for the face) and, once on the skin, it absorbs quickly to leave a refreshing, invisible finish. The key concept behind the sunscreen is that it applies and feels just like a Japanese lotion (I wrote more about Japanese lotions here), and it does this quite well. It goes on as a watery gel and feels just like a light Japanese lotion on the skin, leaving your face comfortable and refreshed — not matte, not silicone-y smooth, and not glowy.

Important to note that NIVEA Sun Protect Water Gel SPF33 isn’t a summer’s sunscreen — it’s not resistant to anything and it doesn’t provide enough UVA protection against harsh UV rays. It’s a sun protection for everyday use, and it’s actually very good at fulling that role; it gives skin undetectable UV protection and it layers well under whatever makeup you want to use over.

I have combination-dry skin and the gel isn’t actually drying, its formula just looks like it would be. It doesn’t add moisture nor mattify skin so it’s great for all skin types, except those with very dry, sensitive skin if they’re used to richer, creamier formulas. I think that finicky men will especially love it though — it’s scent-free, it comes in a super convenient gender-neutral pump bottle, it disappears immediately upon application, and there is no chance of it getting stuck on facial hair. I wish more companies would package their sunscreens in a pump bottle like this — it really makes application so quick and easy. It’s a perfect sunscreen to kick-start good skincare habits.

NIVEA Sun Protect Water Gel SPF33 in the 140g pump bottle is ¥980 (RRP) in Japan.
